Procedure of Root Canal

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure designed to save a severely decayed or infected tooth. The process begins with a diagnosis, where your dentist takes X-rays to assess the extent of the infection and confirm the need for a root canal. Following this, local anesthesia is administered to numb the tooth and surrounding area, ensuring a pain-free experience. The dentist then creates a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.

Next, the infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed using specialized instruments. After the pulp is removed, the empty root canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected to eliminate any remaining bacteria. Once the canals are cleaned, they are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to seal them. Finally, the opening is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling, and a crown may be placed on the tooth afterward to restore its strength and function.

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

  • Relieves Pain: The procedure alleviates the pain associated with an infected tooth, improving overall comfort.
  • Prevents Infection Spread: By removing infected tissue, root canals prevent the spread of infection to surrounding teeth and gums.
  • Restores Function: After treatment, the tooth can function normally, allowing you to eat and speak without discomfort.
  • Long-lasting Solution: With proper care, a tooth that has undergone a root canal can last many years, often a lifetime.
